This year’s Google IO was organised online from May 18 to May 20 for everyone to attend due to the covid restrictions. This annual developer conference is held by Google to showcase the upcoming updates and improvements they are implementing into the Google Ecosystem. However, for this reflection I will mainly be focusing on the new updates and features brought about by the new Android 12 OS update. This year’s announcement of Android 12 focuses on giving android a whole new look and feel by giving the ancient widgets a major facelift and automatic theming of notification panel, lock screen, quick settings and other UI parts depending on the wallpaper of the android device. Privacy was also one of the main points covered during the conference. Android 12 also introduces the Privacy dashboard, Private compute core, clipboard access alerts and many more. In addition, previous versions of android required location access for apps that needed to scan for Bluetooth devices which brought up some privacy concerns among consumers hence android 12 has implemented two new permissions for this issue: BLUETOOTH_SCAN and BLUETOOTH_CONNECT. In conclusion, Android 12 brings about a complete redesign of the OS and addresses the privacy concerns that were present in previous versions while also implementing many quality-of-life features for both consumers and developers.
